Bessie works with North Sea (located in Calgary, AB) to source sockeye salmon. The salmon is wild-caught and from Alaska around Bristol Bay.
Sockeye salmon is native to Canada but, here is why we don’t source locally at this time because sockeye is endangered in B.C. according to the Canadian Wildlife Federation and the Government of Canada. In 2020, only 283,000 sockeye returned instead of the million that was expected. The Yukon has seen similar issues and in August 2020, the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations closed salmon fisheries for the rest of the year because of the drop in fish returning.
Though it is disheartening to see this happen, Bristol Bay is a bright spot and in 2020 had nearly 52 million sockeye fish return. All of the sockeye salmon is from Alaskan waters following sustainable fishing practices including management and fishing practices that take care not to harm the fish, other marine plants and animals or the environment.
